Family and public-life background
Tarique Rahman is the elder son of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. BSS’s biography records his marriage to Dr Zubaida Rahman in 1994 and identifies their daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman. The family collection provides separate profiles and source references for these relationships.
The published education record
Reporting on a meeting with students at Parliament on 30 April 2026, BSS identified Dhaka Residential Model College as Rahman’s former institution. This supports the recorded educational association. No qualification, graduation year or examination result is inferred from that report.
BSS’s February biography describes studies first in law and then international relations at Dhaka University. This records the institution and subjects, without asserting completion of a degree.
Party organization and leadership
The BNP’s biography records Rahman serving as senior joint secretary, senior vice-chairman and acting chairman, associating these roles with 2002, 2009 and 2018 respectively. These are organizational details attributed to the party’s own account; its political assessments are not adopted as established facts.
The party account describes election campaigning in 1991 and a Bogura convention using secret ballots to select local leadership in 1993. These organizational activities are distinct from later government office.
In a separate announcement published on 10 January 2026, the BNP confirmed the standing committee’s decision appointing him chairman. The timeline identifies that date as the announcement’s publication date.
Return and the election period
Associated Press reported that Rahman returned to Dhaka with his wife and daughter on 25 December 2025, ahead of the February 2026 election. His candidacies and constituency records are documented separately in the electoral-history collection.
He unveiled the party’s election manifesto on 6 February 2026. The announcement covered proposals on family assistance, farmers, education and state reform. A manifesto records electoral commitments; implementation requires separate evidence in government initiative and progress records.
Public office and government
Reuters reported that Rahman was sworn in as Prime Minister on 17 February 2026. The canonical office record holds the tenure information, while the Government collection documents formation, selected ministries and sourced portfolio allocations.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath at Parliament’s South Plaza. The contemporaneous BSS report records 25 ministers and 24 state ministers taking their oaths. This describes formation day; later changes are reflected separately in the current cabinet directory.
